How Does a Factory Order Work? A Detailed Explanation

The anticipation of getting a brand new car is often an exhilarating experience, but what if you could customise it exactly to your preferences? This is where factory orders come into play, offering a comprehensive solution to tailor your vehicle to your exact specifications.

So, how do these orders work? Read on to find out more about the intricacies of factory orders, examine the process step by step, and have common queries answered along the way.

What is Factory Order?

A factory order is a bespoke approach to purchasing a new car, allowing you to personalise various aspects such as colour, trim, engine type, and additional options.

Unlike buying from dealership stock, where choices are limited, factory orders provide the flexibility to design a vehicle tailored precisely to your individual preferences.

The Stages of a Factory Order

Placing Your Order

The process commences with selecting and designing your desired model, encompassing choices like exterior and interior colours, performance specifications, and optional features.

If you are unsure about any detail, your dedicated Motorfinity account manager can guide you through this process, taking time to get to know what your specific requirements entail.

Once your order is finalised, the manufacturer confirms the specifications, initiating the production process.

In the Queue

Once confirmed, your order joins a queue awaiting a designated build week. Factors such as factory capacity, seasonal demand fluctuations, and order cancellations influence the queue's progression and subsequently affect the lead time of your vehicle.

Opportunities to secure an earlier build slot may arise if cancellations occur.

Scheduled and Confirmed Build Week

Following the allocation of a build week by the manufacturer, the timeline becomes more defined. This build week indicates the period during which the vehicle will be assembled.

For complex vehicles or those requiring specific components, the manufacturer may first schedule the build week, with confirmation following later.

How Long Does a Factory Order Take?

Factory order lead times vary depending on factors such as manufacturing location, customisation options, and external circumstances.

On average, a factory-ordered car ideally takes 12-15 weeks. This time is determined by considering various factors such as customisation, product scheduling, the manufacturing process, quality control and testing, as well as logistics and delivery. Additionally, market demand and supply chain issues are also taken into account, which influence the overall time taken for a factory order car.

While some orders may take several weeks, others could extend to several months, particularly for complex configurations or during periods of high demand or supply chain disruptions.

Can You Change the Specification of Your Factory Order?

Modifying the specification of a factory order car is possible, but the feasibility and impact on lead times depend on the nature of the changes.

Minor alterations may have minimal effects, while significant modifications could necessitate rescheduling or restarting the order process.

Specific car manufacturers have different policies regarding the modification of specifications for factory-ordered cars. Each manufacturer has its own criteria for assessing the feasibility of changes, rescheduling or restarting the process, evaluating the impact on production line, and managing the quality control process.

How can You get a Car Sooner?

Opting for a stock vehicle or one already in transit to the destination market provides a quicker alternative to factory orders.

Dealerships may offer available options for immediate purchase or facilitate order substitutions to expedite delivery. This is subject to inventory availability and customisation constraints.
