Who makes smart cars?
Smart is a 50-50 venture between Mercedes Benz and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, with this partnership seeing a significant rebrand in 2019, which saw headquarters being moved Ningbo, China.
Prior to the rebrand, smart was established in 1994 and sat within the Mercedes-Benz division. During this time, smart was renowned for manufacturing microcars. However, the rebrand has seen the company produce market-leading electric smart cars that are sold worldwide.
With the production of the #1, #3, and #5 models which began in 2022, smart has redefined itself as a brand that produces compact, yet spacious all-electric SUVs that prove to be a viable family car option. This new approach to practicality has been widely accepted by the market, which has contributed towards more models being planned for release in the not-too-distant future!

Unlike the compact #1 and #3 variants, the #5 is a 4x4 SUV and has its own unique benefits across the models. The most significant one being storage as the #5 boasts an impressive boot space of 630 litres with an additional 74 litres of ‘frunk’ space in the nose of the vehicle.
Although the #5 offers great features as standard, opting for the Pro+ trim and above will allow you to experience the unique quirks this car has to offer. The centre piece of this is the additional 13-inch screen that sits alongside the driver’s instrument panel – which essentially makes the dashboard a giant, interactive screen.
