Speaking to Sergeant James Greenwood, a British Weapons System Operator based at RAF Waddington, we got a little insight into his Royal Air Force experience.
“Joining the Royal Air Force has been a life-changing experience for me. As a young lad from Manchester with little life experience and fresh out of college, I was looking for something to push me out of my comfort zone. I saw the RAF as an opportunity to build a career based on my fascination with planes. During my three years, I have been given opportunities to gain a huge variety of skills like leadership, engineering, social skills, and management.”
“The RAF sets a high standard to aim for in every aspect of your life, it encourages you to reach your full potential and develop not only in your career but also as a person. The Airforce is not just a career, but it’s a lifestyle. Of course, there are additional benefits of joining the RAF, one of the biggest for me was their support programmes for recreational and competitive sports. As a keen powerlifter, this programme was very appealing to me. I competed in an RAF Power Lifting competition in May which has helped my personal growth, and it was great to have support from the RAF throughout the whole process.”
“The biggest lesson I have learnt while being in the Royal Air Force is that giving up is easy, but if you push through the difficult times, you will come out stronger on the other side. I continue to learn valuable lessons from the challenges I have been through. I have met so many great people and made fantastic memories so far. I look forward to seeing what the rest of my career brings.”
We wish James all the best for his future in the Royal Air Force. Thank you for your service!
