Which UK day out destination is most convenient for EV drivers?

Can you guess which popular family day out destination outside of London is the most convenient for EV drivers?

Hint – they all have plenty of chargers within 5km, but some have more than others.

We looked at Tripadvisor’s most popular things to do in England with kids, then for each destination we used our Motorfinity EV charging station finder tool to understand how many EV charging stations there were within a 5km radius. We noted those that had EV charging points within their own car park, making it even more convenient, as well as the number of rapid chargers too, to create our total score.

Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock came first due to the large volume of chargers (200+) in close range, giving drivers plenty of choice. However, due to its central location, there’s no dedicated car park connected to the site. Manchester’s The Snow Centre came second, with 120 chargers within 5km but no EV charging available in its car park.

Surrey’s Thorpe Park was next on the list, featuring 90 EV chargers within 5km as well as EV charging stations at its dedicated car park, meaning visitors from across the country can enjoy convenient charging while enjoying a thrill-packed day. Across the country, Stoke-on-Trent's Alton Towers came 18th on the list, with just seven chargers within 5km, including one rapid charger. Yet it does feature EV charging in its hotel car park, perfect for people making a weekend of it.

Surprisingly, Stonehenge has 11 chargers within 5km of it, more than Alton Towers, but doesn’t have EV charging facilities in its car park. York featured prominently in the list, with The Shambles coming fifth, followed by York Castle Museum, York’s Chocolate Story and The National Railway Museum which came sixth.

Which destinations have an EV charging point in their own car park?

Of the day out destinations that we analysed, eight had EV charging stations at their on-site car park. This makes it even easier to enjoy your day out with family and drive back with a fully charged car without needing to make a specific charging stop off.

Even Cornwall’s Minack Theatre, which is around 290 miles from London and has the smallest number of EV charging stations within 5km of it, has Type 2 socket charging available in its car park, making it a great choice for families on a South West coastal road trip.

Which day out destination has the most rapid chargers?

Combined Charging System (CSS) chargers can typically offer rapid charging of around 50kW, giving you approximately 75 miles of range in about 30 minutes on a typical 60kWh battery.

Although Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock has the highest volume of EV charging points within 5km, Manchester's The Snow Centre has more speedy chargers, with 19% of chargers within that range being CSS type, and 23 available. In comparison, just seven of the nearby charging points to Royal Albert Dock are CSS.

How to find EV charging points near you for your next road trip

We’ve created an EV charging station finder tool, as part of the launch of our ‘evolve’ content hub, which is packed with insights and information to guide you on the road to electric.

To use the tool, simply input your destination postcode and adjust the radius control to expand or narrow your search area. The interactive map covers more than 76,000 public charging devices across the UK, coupled with real-time availability to show you where you can charge up on your travels. You can even filter it by connector type and network provider, to show you the full picture.

Range anxiety is a common concern for people who are starting their journey towards EVs, but with this tool you can see how many chargers are near you, or where you’re heading, to help you plan your journey.

Common myths around EV range anxiety

In our own survey, we found that 87% of people said that EV range was extremely or very important, and this isn’t surprising. But new car technology and surrounding infrastructure is developing fast, making it possible for more people to make the switch.

Did you know:

  • There are more than 76,000 public EV charging points in the UK (as of April 2025)
  • In 2025, the government launched a new EV chargepoint grant, helping homeowners and renters get better access to home charging
  • The government also launched an Electric Car grant, saving people thousands on a new EV
  • Modern EVs typically offer up to 400 miles of range, up from just 210 miles in 2020

This means that even making the journey from London to visit Liverpool Albert Dock - a distance of almost 180 miles - may be possible on just one charge. And, after making use of the many chargers in the area at the North West sightseeing destination, it’s easy to top up before the journey home.

Methodology

Data correct as of March 2026. To find out an ‘EV convenience score’, Motorfinity analysed the top 38 destinations that were listed on Tripadvisor’s most popular things to do in England with kids article, and used Motorfinity’s EV charging station finder tool to learn how many charging points were within 5km. 200 was the total no. of charging points the tool could show, so is the maximum amount listed.

Using the tool and publicly available information online, it also logged if the destination had dedicated EV charging facilities on an on-site car park, as well as the number of CSS (rapid) charging stations specifically. A weighted score was then given to these factors to create the final ranking.

Destinations in London weren’t included due to the large volume of charging points located there, to avoid skewing the data.
